Shades of Gray, debuted their eclectic sound at the Patio on Guerra Restaurant in downtown McAllen, TX on the last Thursday of August. Lead singer Grady Long (stage name Curt Gray) is currently in Houston for Labor Day weekend singing Hindi songs at a Miss Bollywood Pageant. At Patio on Guerra this tall, singer of Norwegian descent Curt Gray sang all different types of music in English: rock, pop, blues, and concluded with country.

Groovy.  Grooooooovy,” J. Salazar commented audibly from the audience in response to the music. That was a pretty good summary of audience response to the band.

Accompanying Gray’s vocals was lead guitarist Omar Ramos, bassist Victor Ramirez, and Homer Hidjibi on drums. With only one practice session under their belt, Shades of Gray showcased quite a bit of talent.

Guitarist Omar’s mother and stepfather sat up front in the audience. His mother, Evylyn Ramos, said knowingly, “Amazing talent for the RGV.” Nodding, Omar’s step dad kicked in, “Amazing,” looking up at Curt Gray on the mic, “Good voice.”

"[The band is] Great, my favorite is the guitarist," R. Baker added.

The band played and sang covers they agreed upon by individually creating lists of what they wanted to perform and choosing those that were on all lists then agreeing on an order. Gray gave a nod to Patio on Guerra in interview, “It’s the best venue in town.”

Though no future shows are booked as of yet, Gray said he is open to playing with this band or any one of its members in the future. Art professor Lorenzo Pace from UTRGV sitting at the back of the restaurant, commented, “I would say,as a person of color, it’s good to hear and see such cohesion of band members and music.”
